Dangerous Goods by Sea
Scope
Every day potentially hazardous goods can be shipped by sea because the people involved know how to handle, store and ship these goods safely. This course will give participants a basic understanding of the regulations surrounding the shipping of dangerous goods, including the classification of goods and appropriate labeling and packing.

The knowledge gained in this course will help participants to stay safe when handling dangerous goods in their day-to-day activities and in the event there is an emergency or incident with the goods. It will also indicate the documentation that must accompany cargo shipments of dangerous goods.

There is no requirement for prior knowledge or experience before completing this course, it is aimed at any individuals involved in the handling of dangerous goods for transportation by sea.

Course Content:
  • Define the meaning of dangerous goods by sea.
  • Recall the legislation and regulations governing dangerous goods.
  • Distinguish between the classifications of dangerous goods.
  • Identify the meaning of subsidiary risk.
  • Identify packing groups and types of packaging.
  • Recall the types of labeling required for goods.
  • Identify the IMO list of dangerous goods.
  • Recall the shipper’s responsibilities.
  • Recall the documentation required for shipping dangerous goods by sea.
  • Identify the requirements for loading and shipping dangerous goods by sea.
  • Identify emergency situations and how to deal with them.
  • Identify incidents and how to report them.

Standards Used:
This course is written with reference to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code), the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). It also draws upon industry best practices throughout.
